Digital Consent Is Real Consent

The Wits University students conducted a TFGBV awareness campaign which they titled Digital Consent Is Real Consent.

The objectives of the campaign included:

  • Educating and raising awareness: To educate young people about the forms and consequences of TFGBV, including cyberstalking, harassment, non-consensual image sharing, and online gendered abuse.
  • Promoting digital consent: To promote the importance of digital consent and respectful online behaviour, highlighting the need for boundaries and mutual respect in digital interactions.
  • Fostering a culture of empathy and respect: To foster a culture of empathy, respect, and inclusivity in digital spaces, encouraging young people to think critically about their online actions and their impact on others.
To achieve this, the students adopted the methodology using art to express participant understanding of the campaign’s objectives. The event was captured and converted into a social media awareness campaign with the consent of the participants.
